Why do hummingbirds inspire us?
Hummingbirds belong to the family of small, beneficial birds. Their beaks vary greatly and are adapted to flower types. Most hummingbirds have colourful, shimmering plumage and fly at a very high frequency of 40 to 50 wing beats per second. With their flexible wings, they can fly on the spot, sideways and even backwards, for example to drink nectar or fertilise plants. This makes the hummingbird the only bird in the world with this ability. In relation to their body size, hummingbirds are probably the fastest vertebrates in the world.
